Applied Physicist - Collective Effects(m/w/x)
Developing methods for accurate beam-based impedance measurements and forecasting at a global particle physics research facility. Experience with beam-based measurements and Python development preferred. 30 days paid leave, 2 weeks annual closure, and comprehensive health insurance.
Requirements
- Knowledge of Accelerator and beam physics
- Knowledge of collective effects (e.g. impedance effects)
- Knowledge of electromagnetism and electrodynamics
- Software development experience (ideally Python)
- Experience with bench and/or beam-based measurements
- Scientific writing experience
- Python programming
- Problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills
- Spoken and written English, commitment to learn French
- National of CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Professional background in Physics, Engineering, or related field
- Master's degree with 2-6 years post-graduation professional experience OR PhD with no more than 3 years post-graduation professional experience
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract
Tasks
- Assess impedance effect limitations for HL-LHC beam parameters.
- Identify impedance effect mitigations for HL-LHC beam parameters.
- Improve the current forecasting model for impedance effects.
- Enhance the assessment tool for impedance effect mitigation.
- Develop new methods for accurate, precise beam-based impedance measurements.
- Apply methods to short- and long-range wake regimes.
- Improve models to overcome past measurement shortcomings.
- Improve measurement techniques to overcome past measurement shortcomings.
- Perform multibunch simulations using state-of-the-art codes.
- Utilize Xsuite/Xwakes and DELPHI/e-DELPHI codes.
- Improve and document Xwakes code when needed.
- Improve and document the LHC impedance model.
- Improve and document Vlasov solvers when needed.
