## The position:
We invite applications for a predoc position in Functional and Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Vienna, Austria. The position is part of an international research project co-funded by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) aimed at gaining novel insights into the molecular adaptation of plants to challenging environmental conditions. The PhD candidate will be integrated in the Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution.

## The project:
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate ideally with some research expertise to join our research group for a project linking plant biology, microbiology, and environmental science. The project focuses on understanding the relationships between plants and their root microbiomes in extreme environments, using the unique ecosystem of Lake Neusiedl (Burgenland, Austria) as a natural model. Lake Neusiedl is renowned for its specialized vegetation, shaped by its unique climate and challenging saline soil conditions. This project focuses on the salt-adapted plant species Lepidium cartilagineum and its root microbiome, which was monitored across two seasons and four sites. The research aims to analyze complex datasets, including soil ion composition, plant metabolic profiles and the root microbiome.
Your future tasks:
Within a 3 months frame, we want you to
1. Analyze and integrate datasets (soil chemistry, plant metabolites, and microbiome data).
2. Investigate the functional role of the root microbiome in plant environmental adaptation.
3. Ultimately, advance our understanding of plant-microbe interactions in extreme environments.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with:
* a MSc degree in plant biology, bioinformatics and statistics, microbiology or a related field;
* a strong interest in plant-microbe interactions and data mining including
* very good data analyses skills and knowledge on application of statistical tools
* teamwork, communication and problem-solving abilities;
* proficiency in English (working language of the lab)
