# Tenure-Track Professorship in Earth System Sciences
## The position
We seek applicants for a Tenure Track Professorship in the general field of sedimentology related to the Earth System. The successful candidate will be an excellent, field-capable sedimentologist with a geological background. Interests could include geological field-based methods and big data applications and machine learning methods. Research focus will be on feedback processes between erosion, sedimentation, tectonics and climate, and topics could include interplay of natural geological and anthropogenically influenced processes, or in balancing resource exploitation with sustainability in the context of a rapidly changing planet. The candidate will lead geological field courses as well as lecture courses in stratigraphy / evolution of the Earth System, and will be expected to collaborate across disciplines in the faculty, e.g. within environmental and climate change and paleoclimate working groups. The future professorship should contribute to the University‘s strategic priority “Climate, Environment, Sustainability”, and will be involved in applied resource and sustainability research across geoscientific departments at the University of Vienna and beyond. The ability to enter into a interdisciplinary dialogue with social sciences and humanities is considered advantageous.
The research in our faculty is diverse, integrative and interdisciplinary across a wide range of scales and geoscience disciplines. The department researches structural geology (macro-, micro- scale, tectonics, salt tectonics), geoenergy and applied research, seismic interpretation, stratigraphy, anthropogenic processes and products, clay mineral processes and products, glacial geology and carbonate sedimentology. Laboratory facilities encompass sediment labs and several core facilities for electron beam measurement techniques and with solid-state mass spectroscopy, isotope geochemistry labs, X-ray diffraction and mineral spectroscopy are available within the faculty, and the successful candidate would also have access to high performance computing facilities. The faculty runs the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Science (VISESS), a well-recognized doctoral school providing a platform for interdisciplinary research, transferable skills, and doctoral education.
