Our lab is rooted in the belief that scientific challenges can be overcome by combining ideas and approaches from different disciplines. Therefore multidisciplinary research encompassing biology, chemistry, physics and engineering is at the core of our work. We are looking for a highly motivated student with a strong interest in microscopy development and bioimaging. Our work depends on interdisciplinary research and collaboration with biological research groups. The research project aims at developing and constructing innovative microscopes which push beyond the current limitations of optical microscopy and to apply them in biological research. **Required qualifications:** •    Master of Science (M.Sc.) in a relevant subject (such as physics, biology, chemistry or engineering). •    Solid written and spoken English •    Willingness to learn new skills beyond own field •    Expertise in programming (at least one of the following Python, MatLab, C, C++, C#) Desirable Skills & Attributes •    Knowledge of mechanical/electronical engineering applicable to microscope development •    Experience in optical design •    Initial exposure or experience with biochemistry **Our offer:** The full-time position is available immediately. Ph.D. students are awarded a four-year appointment after a successful evaluation by the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental, and Systems Biology (IMPRS-CellDevoSys). Salary and social benefits will be under the regulations of the German TVöD Bund (salary agreement for public service employees). •    The Max Planck Society strives for gender equality and diversity.
