About the role

Are you looking for an internship that provides hands-on experience in research publishing and the chance to make connections at one of the largest publishers of education and research content?

The Springer Nature Opening Doors internship, Journals (Eastern Europe Extended) is a paid opportunity in Germany to gain experience in research and science news publishing in our journals, books or magazines.

We are seeking candidates who believe they can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion in our organisation, in our content, or both. The successful applicant will spend up to six months within Journals (Eastern Europe Extended), part of the Research Publishing division of Springer Nature. If selected for this internship, you will be contributing to the strategic projects of the team (depending on the applicant skills):

  • Review Consultants Bureau (CB) journal operations and editorial practices to suggest improvements and points to address in contract renewals, as well as to identify top journals for the team to focus;​

  • Workflow transformation: enabling Open Access; signing new journal contracts; moving journals to the new typesetting and translation workflow; introducing electronic submission systems in the journals;

  • Support the team in running the portfolio of 224 society journals, performing research integrity checks, maintaining internal systems and processes;

  • Support the analysis of publishing market and identify new growth opportunities in the Eastern Europe Extended region (spreading from Lithuania and Poland to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan);

  • Contribute to the Conference Acquisition Team activities by searching best journals for research coming from conferences in applied sciences.

About us:

The Eastern Europe Extended Journals team supports researchers in countries spreading from Lithuania and Poland in the West to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in the East. The journal portfolio

35 Consultants Bureau hybrid and subscription journals publishing original research and English content translated from Russian or Ukrainian; 4 society hybrid journals, 4 fully Open Access journals, and 181 hybrid journals distributed in cooperation with Pleiades Publishing. We also run the Conference Acquisition Team which seeks the best home across Springer Nature journals and books for applied science content coming from top conferences.

About you:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience or currently enrolled in a MS or PhD program

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral

  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail, able to prioritize numerous tasks

  • Ability to work well in a team, demonstrating strong collaboration and interpersonal skills

  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries, willingness to learn and ability to grasp things quickly

  • Computer literate – understands common software (e.g. Microsoft Office suite) and gains new software skills quickly

  • Good analytical skills

  • Available to start in June 2025 for an internship of up to six months

  • Strong interest in research publishing

  • Knowledge of research market/infrastructure in one of the following countries and/or ability to speak the language is a plus: Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan.
