**FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Asset Management and Logistics and close coordination with the Chief of Facilities Management Services, the EMS Coordinator is required to perform the following duties:
* **Policy Development and Implementation:** Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing operation of UNIDO’s Environmental Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management System (EMS). Monitor and analyze EMS initiatives, review relevant documents and reports, and propose corrective actions as necessary.
* **Stakeholder Coordination:** Facilitate and manage the EMS working group, engaging key stakeholders—including UNEP—during implementation. Organize and lead discussions, workshops, and strategy sessions to advance sustainability goals, ensuring compliance with ISO 14001 certification requirements.
* **Research and Data Analysis:** Gather, analyze, and present data from various sources to inform EMS initiatives. Conduct assessments, trend analysis, and benchmarking studies to support strategic decision-making.
* **Environmental Performance Monitoring:** Assist in defining objectives, formalizing action plans, and establishing key performance indicators to track sustainability progress. Contribute to policy development by conducting evaluations and identifying best practices.
* **Survey and Needs Assessment:** Design and conduct surveys to gather insights on sustainability performance. Analyze responses, identify challenges, and prepare actionable recommendations for the EMS steering group.
* **Budget and Resource Planning:** Prepare cost estimates, project schedules, and resource plans for EMS implementation. Ensure that sustainability initiatives are aligned with budgetary and operational constraints.
* **Awareness and Training:** Develop and execute a communication and outreach strategy to promote environmental sustainability. Organize training sessions, seminars, and workshops to encourage staff engagement and behavioral change.
* **Facilities and Operations Integration:** Work closely with Facilities Management Services to embed sustainability into infrastructure, procurement, energy management, waste reduction, and other operational functions within the organization.
* **Reporting and Compliance:** Prepare reports, background papers, and strategic recommendations to guide policy decisions. Maintain documentation to support ISO 14001 certification and other environmental compliance requirements.
* **Additional Duties:** Undertake any other tasks as required to enhance environmental sustainability within the organization.
**MINIMUM ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
**Education:** Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental sciences, engineering and/or a related field, is **required**.
**Technical and Functional Experience**:
* A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management, program management related to environmental initiatives, or related fields is **required**.
* Experience in implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) is **required**.
* Proven experience in methodologies (i.e. PRINCE2) and knowledge of standards (i.e. PMI) for project management, and experience in the evaluation and oversight of environmental compliance and the development of environmental KPI is desirable.
* Experience preparing and reviewing technical environmental documents, plans and reports is desirable.
* Experience analyzing, interpreting and assessing compliance with complex environmental regulations and recommending and implementing solutions is an asset.
* Demonstrated professionalism, planning and organizing skills, and strong client orientation are highly desirable.
Training or certification in any of the below would be highly desirable:
* ISO 14001, ISO 14031 or EMAS or other Environmental Management Certification
* PRINCE2 (foundation or practitioner) and/or PMP (PMI)
* Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
* Environmental Health and Safety Management Specialist (EHS)
**Languages**: Fluency in written and spoken English is **required**. Fluency and/or working knowledge of another official UN language, is desirable.
