# Bachelor- or Masterthesis - Easily Detachable Battery Cell Connections (all genders)
**WHAT COUNTS FOR US IS THE IDEA -
AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT.**
CHANGE STARTS WITH US.
The goal of research at Fraunhofer LBF is the further development of battery technologies in the context of sustainability and the circular economy.
**Bachelor- or Masterthesis on developing concepts for easily detachable battery cell connections (all genders)**
Darmstadt
**Here you create change**
The electrical connection of cell to cell in modules in traction battery systems for EVs is typically achieved through welding. While welding provides strong and durable connections, it has significant drawbacks in terms of repairability, disassembly, and reusability. Alternative mechanical connection methods-such as press-fit contacts, spring-loaded connectors, clamping mechanisms, and screw or bolt connections—offer advantages in terms of maintenance, repairability, reusability, and recycling. However, these solutions must address challenges such as increased electrical contact resistance, weight, mechanical stability, and potential loosening under vibration and thermal cycling.
This thesis aims to develop and evaluate reliable concepts for easily detachable connection methods at the cell level for cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch cells in ship applications. The student will explore innovative solutions that improve upon existing mechanical connection methods while ensuring high electrical and mechanical performance. Initial designs from a previous student are available, and the new student will have the opportunity to continue this work by refining and testing the method on a prototype.
* Literature review
* Design an alternative solution to conventional cell connection methods, such as welding
* Independently develop creative ideas for new battery module designs
* Optimize the connection for low contact resistance, vibration loosening, ease of automation, and minimal weight
* Derivation of requirements for cell connection for use in ships
* Evaluation of reliability and solubility of proposed connection methods
* Conducting FE simulations as part of the evaluation
* Verify the proposed solution by creating and testing a prototype
* Presentation and documentation of the results
