Associate Academic Officer: Risk Modelling - Loss and Damage(m/w/x)
Leading CLIMADA modeling research for flood and drought hazards at a global UN think tank. PhD with 1 year experience or MA/MSc with 5 years research in climate risk analytics required. 30 days annual leave, health insurance scheme.
Requirements
- PhD or MA/MSc degree in economics, finance, environmental engineering or related field with background in climate adaptation/hazard management
- PhD with 1 year relevant experience OR MA/MSc with 5 years research/academia experience in climate adaptation/risk analytics/climate finance
- Proven research experience in climate risk analytics
- Strong programming skills in Python or other languages
- Familiarity with UN or international institutions
- Proven track record in research and publications
- Strong project management skills with stakeholders
- Ability to explain complex processes to non-experts
- Initiative seeker with interest in quantitative climate risk analysis/finance
- Excellent presentation and communication skills
- Ability to lead a small team
- PhD in relevant topic is an asset
- Previous experience with CLIMADA/ECA is an asset
- Good understanding/experience in disaster risk reduction/management and climate adaptation is an asset
- Experience in proposal writing and methodological frameworks design in development cooperation and actor coordination is an asset
- Work experience in developing countries is an asset
- Fluency in English required
- Knowledge of German is an asset
- Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset
Tasks
- Lead research on CLIMADA modeling for Loss and Damage, flood, and drought hazards
- Innovate modeling approaches with advanced calibration and optimization techniques
- Address knowledge gaps in quantifying basic needs through open-source tools
- Coordinate calibration, validation, and application of modeling methods in projects
- Bridge advanced modeling efforts with project management for strategic alignment
- Integrate modeling outputs into project planning, implementation, and monitoring
- Facilitate communication between modeling teams, project managers, and external partners
- Support project design and management with methodological rigor and relevance
- Develop tools and workflows to operationalize modeling results in project cycles
- Enhance project teams' understanding and use of modeling tools through capacity building
- Co-develop new project activities for UNU-EHS in climate risk analytics
- Support proposal writing for climate risk and analytics projects
- Establish and maintain networks with stakeholders in various sectors
- Lead and contribute to writing scientific publications and research papers
- Supervise MSc theses and contribute to MSc-level teaching
- Represent the organization at climate risk events and conferences
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
