Associate Academic Officer – Risk Recovery Governance(m/w/x)
Assessing systemic risks from extreme weather events and analyzing disaster recovery processes using BBB principles. Ph.D. in Risk Governance or related field with one year of relevant experience required. 30 days annual leave and health insurance scheme.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Risk Governance, Disaster Risk Management, Climate Adaptation or relevant field
- Minimum one year directly relevant experience
- Knowledge of governance and pathways approaches in climate change context, preferable international
- Demonstrated research experience in disaster risk governance, including publications
- Experience drafting analytical reports, policy briefs, and presentations
- Experience supporting project implementation and coordination, preferably international/multi-cultural
- Experience writing proposals for third-party funding
- Experience teaching at MSc and PhD-level, including thesis supervision, preferably intercultural
- At least three years post-doctoral experience after PhD in disaster risk management, focus on recovery pathways
- Experience with participatory research
- Strong conceptual and methodological skills
- Experience engaging with international assessment or science-policy processes
- Knowledge of UN processes related to adaptation and loss and damage
- International work experience
- Professional networks in Germany, Nigeria, Netherlands, or Brazil
- Experience working in Germany is an asset, particularly for research in Ahr Valley
- Fluency in English required
- Knowledge of German and another UN official working language is an asset
- Knowledge of local language in Nigeria, Brazil, Netherlands, or Germany is an asset
Tasks
- Lead assessment of systemic risks from extreme weather events
- Analyze disaster recovery processes using BBB principles
- Apply theoretical frameworks in risk and recovery governance
- Identify key enablers and barriers in disaster recovery
- Analyze financial and insurance mechanisms' impact on recovery
- Co-create disaster recovery pathways with stakeholders
- Integrate innovative insurance models and adaptive financing
- Synthesize lessons learned from case studies
- Contribute to international science-policy processes
- Prepare and write scientific outputs and policy briefs
- Provide input into the IPCC AR7 process
- Present research findings at scientific and policy events
- Ensure research activities meet ethical and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with donors and project partners
- Support timely implementation of project activities
- Lead annual project reports and other outputs
- Review and verify project outputs with stakeholders
- Maintain accurate project documentation
- Support internal monitoring and reporting processes
- Identify capacity-strengthening needs among stakeholders
- Design and deliver capacity-strengthening activities
- Contribute to teaching and education activities
- Supervise students' Master theses
- Write and co-author scientific publications
- Engage with UN agencies and research institutions
- Prepare and draft funding proposals
- Establish strategic partnerships with key stakeholders
- Strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange
- Perform other duties as assigned
