Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field
- Proven experience in laboratory/experimental and industrial vacuum systems
- Strong understanding of vacuum physics
- Expertise in pump technologies, sealing methods, and vacuum system design
- Hands-on experience with leak detection and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with chemical/particulate vacuum cleanliness testing
- Experience building and commissioning vacuum systems
- Ability to read/produce engineering drawings
- Experience collaborating with suppliers and managing technical specifications
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams
- Understanding of vacuum systems interfaces with control systems

Tasks
- Design vacuum systems for small experimental setups
- Specify vacuum systems for medium-scale systems
- Design vacuum systems for large-scale infrastructure
- Define vacuum system requirements
- Perform conductance calculations
- Calculate outgassing rates
- Determine pump sizing
- Analyze transient pump-down behavior
- Select and specify pumps
- Choose valves, gauges, seals, and feedthroughs
- Select vacuum-compatible materials
- Choose surface treatments
- Interface with vendors
- Evaluate technical proposals
- Support procurement of long-lead equipment
- Integrate vacuum systems into laser systems
- Integrate vacuum systems into beam transport systems
- Integrate vacuum systems into target injection and tracking systems
- Integrate vacuum systems into diagnostic equipment
- Integrate vacuum systems into facility infrastructure
- Collaborate with controls engineers on pump sequencing
- Collaborate on interlocks and safety systems
- Collaborate on monitoring and automation
- Support assembly of vacuum systems
- Support installation of vacuum systems
- Support commissioning of vacuum systems
- Develop leak testing procedures
- Conduct pump-down testing
- Validate system performance
- Troubleshoot system issues
- Develop operating procedures
- Create maintenance plans
- Enhance system reliability
