PhD Position on Elastocaloric Microcooling for Photonic Systems(m/w/x)
Developing microcooling systems for photonic applications using SMA thin films, optical lithography, and 3D printing. Master's degree (GPA <1.7) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Microsystem Technology required. Flexible working time models.
Requirements
- Master's degree (GPA <1.7) in Mechanical, Electrical, Microsystem Technology, or related field
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, or microsystems engineering
- Experience in CAD, Lumped element modelling, FEM simulation, MATLAB programming, thermal characterization, mechanical testing
- High proficiency in spoken and written English
Tasks
- Develop elastocaloric microcooling systems using SMA thin films
- Develop intelligent thermal switches for controllable heat transfer
- Integrate thermal switches into elastocaloric cooling devices to enhance heat dissipation and reliability
- Conduct rapid prototyping using optical lithography, 3D printing, and laser technology
- Develop, characterize, and control cooling demonstrator variants
- Optimize designs using simulations
- Collaborate with project partners from ETH Zurich and Fraunhofer IWM
