Diode Laser Engineer(m/w/x)
Designing, testing, and modeling high-power laser diode emitters for fusion energy applications at a fusion energy startup. PhD or equivalent in optical/electrical engineering or physics required. Company ownership in stock options, 30 days vacation.
Requirements
- PhD or equivalent experience in optical, electrical, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field
- Proven experience designing, building, and operating laser diode test and characterization setups
- Strong understanding of thermal management, reliability physics, degradation mechanisms, and lifetime testing methodologies
- Comfortable working with large experimental datasets and applying statistical and modeling tools
- Ability to work effectively across internal system teams and with external suppliers and collaborators
- Consideration of component-level decisions affecting system-level performance, cost, scalability, and operational viability
- Experience with diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL), high-average-power laser systems, or adjacent fields
- Experience with thermal, optical, or reliability modeling tools to support predictive design and scaling
Tasks
- Design and evaluate high-power laser diode emitters, bars, and stacks
- Develop and execute electro-optical, thermal, and reliability test protocols
- Design, commission, and operate automated test benches for laser diode devices
- Lead accelerated life testing and analyze degradation mechanisms
- Build predictive lifetime and reliability models for system design
- Collaborate with industry partners and suppliers to enhance diode performance
- Ensure effective integration of diode technologies into laser modules
- Analyze experimental datasets and generate technical documentation
