Requirements

  • Commissioning or operating large detector
  • Detector data analysis skills
  • Commissioning lab test setups (LV, HV, vacuum, or associated systems)
  • Experience with LHC/VELO interface field (e.g., motion, safety, impedance, vacuum, beam background)
  • Expertise in detector physics
  • Proficiency in programming (ideally Python and C++, at least one)
  • Knowledge of SCADA system (WinCC or other)
  • Spoken and written English, commitment to learn French
  • Nationality of CERN Member or Associate Member State
  • Professional background in Particle Physics, Detector Physics, or related field
  • Master's degree with 2 to 6 years post-graduation experience
  • PhD with no more than 3 years post-graduation experience
  • No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract

Tasks

  • Prepare the VELO detector for LS3.
  • Ensure the detector's safe state during LS3.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities for LS3.
  • Plan interventions for LS3.
  • Support replacement of VELO modules.
  • Support recommissioning of CERN test setup.
  • Manage cooling systems for the test setup.
  • Manage vacuum systems for the test setup.
  • Manage slow control for the test setup.
  • Manage DAQ for the test setup.
  • Manage safety systems for the test setup.
  • Test VELO modules using the CERN setup.
  • Assist external institutes with module validation.
  • Analyze Run 3 VELO data.
  • Characterize detector performance from Run 3 data.
  • Improve understanding of detector behavior.
  • Improve simulations for Run 4.
  • Prepare for Run 4 recommissioning.
  • Contribute to VELO Upgrade II R&D.
  • Design RF boxes for Upgrade II.
  • Develop vacuum systems for Upgrade II.
  • Design VELO modules for Upgrade II.
  • Develop cooling systems for Upgrade II modules.
