Radiation Protection Technical Engineer(m/w/x)
Managing radioactive waste from LHC experiments and assessing component end-of-life impacts at a high-energy physics research organization. Hands-on experience with radiation detection and measurement instruments required. 30 days paid leave, plus 2 weeks annual closure.
Requirements
- Educational background in health physics or radiation protection
- Solid understanding of radiation protection principles
- Solid understanding of applicable regulatory frameworks
- Hands-on experience with radiation detection and measurement instruments
- Experience in detection and quantification of ionising radiation
- Introductory experience with quality management systems (QMS)
- Basic control, verification, traceability, and documentation practices
- Foundational knowledge of operational process analysis
- Consideration of performance, risk, and safety aspects
- Exposure to radioactive waste management and/or decommissioning projects (asset)
- Strong foundation in health physics
- Emphasis on radiation protection principles
- Emphasis on regulatory compliance
- Solid knowledge of radiation detection and measurement techniques
- Interpretation of measurement results
- Good understanding of quality assurance principles and tools
- Documentation control, traceability, and basic verification processes
- Understanding of engineering process performance and safety assessment methodologies
- Attention to risk analysis and operational safety
- Ability to prepare clear and structured technical documentation
- Spoken and written English or French
- Commitment to learn basics of other language
- CERN Member or Associate Member State nationality
- Maximum two years professional experience since graduation in Radiation Protection or related field
- Bachelor's or Master's degree
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract
- University degree
- No PhD
- Ability to work in Radiation Areas
- Ability to perform interventions in underground installations
- Valid driving licence
- Tolerance to exposure to asbestos
- Tolerance to exposure to lead
- Tolerance to risk of falling from heights

Tasks
- Assist LHC experiment waste producers
- Participate in CERN waste treatment centre operations
- Assess impacts of radioactive component end-of-life management
- Advise on safe management of diverse radioactive waste
- Assist with radioactive waste item reception
- Measure physical properties for safe waste management
- Ensure traceability of waste characteristics
- Ensure traceability of waste management actions
- Define appropriate interim storage conditions
- Define appropriate processing pathways
- Monitor and control radiation protection in waste facilities
- Monitor and control technical operability of waste facilities
- Contribute to radiological classification of waste packages
- Verify compliance of final waste packages
- Draft engineering and technical documentation in English/French
