Requirements

  • •University degree in law, international law, refugee law, human rights law, or humanitarian law
  • •6 years relevant experience with undergraduate degree, or 5 years relevant experience with graduate degree, or 4 years relevant experience with doctorate degree
  • •In-depth knowledge of international refugee law and human rights law
  • •Excellent legal research, analytical, and drafting skills
  • •Attention to detail
  • •Experience drafting legal guidance in clear and concise English to publication standard
  • •Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • •Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • •Proficiency in legal research tools
  • •Excellent written and spoken English
  • •Proficiency in other UN languages

Work Experience

Tasks

  • •Conduct legal research on international refugee law
  • •Develop updated guidance on international refugee law
  • •Analyze UNHCR and non-UNHCR sources for legal interpretation
  • •Coordinate with external research partners
  • •Review UNHCR legal guidance for inconsistencies and gaps
  • •Draft research notes and background papers based on findings
  • •Maintain accurate records of research and drafts
  • •Document project activities and provide status updates
  • •Prepare internal research mapping notes
  • •Create discussion notes on contentious legal issues
  • •Archive research materials and documentation
  • •Participate in regular meetings to discuss progress and challenges
  • •Advocate for proper interpretation of legal standards
  • •Provide legal advice and draft position papers
  • •Support the formulation of protection strategies
  • •Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on protection principles
  • •Handle individual cases involving complex legal questions
  • •Represent the office in meetings with external counterparts
  • •Prepare protection documents in collaboration with supervisors
  • •Contribute to project proposals and implementation
  • •Identify and manage risks related to legal responsibilities
