Requirements

  • University degree in law, international law, refugee law, human rights law, or humanitarian law
  • 6 years relevant experience with undergraduate degree, or 5 years relevant experience with graduate degree, or 4 years relevant experience with doctorate degree
  • In-depth knowledge of international refugee law and human rights law
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, and drafting skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience drafting legal guidance in clear and concise English to publication standard
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in legal research tools
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in other UN languages

Work Experience

Tasks

  • Conduct legal research on international refugee law
  • Develop updated guidance on international refugee law
  • Analyze UNHCR and non-UNHCR sources for legal interpretation
  • Coordinate with external research partners
  • Review UNHCR legal guidance for inconsistencies and gaps
  • Draft research notes and background papers based on findings
  • Maintain accurate records of research and drafts
  • Document project activities and provide status updates
  • Prepare internal research mapping notes
  • Create discussion notes on contentious legal issues
  • Archive research materials and documentation
  • Participate in regular meetings to discuss progress and challenges
  • Advocate for proper interpretation of legal standards
  • Provide legal advice and draft position papers
  • Support the formulation of protection strategies
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on protection principles
  • Handle individual cases involving complex legal questions
  • Represent the office in meetings with external counterparts
  • Prepare protection documents in collaboration with supervisors
