Legal Officer – Middle East Programme(m/w/x)
Advancing strategic litigation and shaping legal strategies for human rights violations. Minimum 4 years litigating and investigating international crimes required. Work in independent non-profit, survivor-centred justice focus.
Requirements
- Right to work in Switzerland
- Bachelor's degree in law, criminal justice, human rights, or international law
- Minimum 4 years experience litigating human rights, humanitarian law, or international criminal law
- Minimum 4 years experience investigating human rights violations or international crimes
- Experience as investigator within international tribunal or mechanism is desirable
- Strong understanding of gender perspectives in armed conflict and fragile security contexts
- Demonstrated experience working with partners on litigation initiatives
- Experience in case preparation and development, including investigation, case strategy, legal drafting
- Proficiency in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Fluency in English and Arabic is highly desirable
- Good knowledge and understanding of Middle East context and implications for justice and accountability
- Familiarity with volatile and unpredictable nature of working in conflict environments
Tasks
- Advance strategic litigation initiatives
- Contribute to human rights outcomes
- Support in-depth investigations
- Produce high-quality legal memoranda and arguments
- Shape effective legal strategies
- Support joint legal initiatives with partners
- Initiate and develop litigation in international human rights and humanitarian law
- Deliver analysis on legal frameworks
- Draft legal documents and submissions
- Support strategies for investigating international crimes and human rights violations
- Conduct open-source research on specific incidents
- Monitor open sources for investigation leads
- Embed gender proactive, trauma-informed, and survivor-led approaches
- Build engagement with partner organizations and stakeholders
- Design and implement advocacy strategies
- Monitor legal and policy developments
- Identify opportunities for strategic litigation
- Support internal coordination within the legal team
- Manage case documentation and knowledge sharing
- Implement Middle East-focused projects
- Facilitate high-level advocacy events
- Liaise with panellists and prepare event materials
- Organize meetings and prepare agendas
- Take notes during meetings
- Support other activities as directed
