Requirements

  • Experience in electron microscopy and materials characterisation
  • Strong background in materials science, phase equilibria, and microstructure-property relationships
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary and international environment
  • Experience with superconducting materials or vacuum-compatible materials
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques (welding, soldering, brasing, forming)
  • Experience in surface analysis, coatings, or interface characterisation
  • Hands-on experience with electron microscopy techniques (SEM + EDX)
  • Experience with EBSD, FIB, STEM, XRD (desirable)
  • Data analysis and scripting (e.g. Python)
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Clear communication and presentation skills
  • Good organisational skills for managing experimental campaigns
  • Electrical and magnetic test experience (advantageous)
  • Spoken and written English, commitment to learn French
  • National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
  • Professional background in Materials Science/Engineering or related field
  • Master's degree with 2 to 6 years post-graduation experience
  • PhD with no more than 3 years post-graduation experience
  • Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before
  • Valid driving licence

Tasks

  • Contribute to quality control and materials development
  • Investigate microstructure-property relationships and failure mechanisms
  • Examine Nb3Sn wire samples using microscopy
  • Characterise materials with advanced microscopy and XRD techniques
  • Support design optimisation and research direction
  • Design and conduct interdisciplinary materials science studies
  • Perform advanced materials characterisation with electron microscopy
  • Investigate phase transformations and microstructural evolution
  • Assess production techniques based on international standards
  • Conduct quantitative image and data analysis
  • Collaborate with internal teams and research institutes
  • Summarise findings and present results in technical meetings
