Applied Scientist in Materials Engineering(m/w/x)
Investigating Nb3Sn wire samples using microscopy for CERN's materials development. Electron microscopy and materials characterisation experience required. 30 days paid leave, CERN Pension Fund membership.
Requirements
- Experience in electron microscopy and materials characterisation
- Strong background in materials science, phase equilibria, and microstructure-property relationships
- Ability to work in interdisciplinary and international environment
- Experience with superconducting materials or vacuum-compatible materials
- Knowledge of fabrication techniques (welding, soldering, brasing, forming)
- Experience in surface analysis, coatings, or interface characterisation
- Hands-on experience with electron microscopy techniques (SEM + EDX)
- Experience with EBSD, FIB, STEM, XRD (desirable)
- Data analysis and scripting (e.g. Python)
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Clear communication and presentation skills
- Good organisational skills for managing experimental campaigns
- Electrical and magnetic test experience (advantageous)
- Spoken and written English, commitment to learn French
- National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Professional background in Materials Science/Engineering or related field
- Master's degree with 2 to 6 years post-graduation experience
- PhD with no more than 3 years post-graduation experience
- Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before
- Valid driving licence
Tasks
- Contribute to quality control and materials development
- Investigate microstructure-property relationships and failure mechanisms
- Examine Nb3Sn wire samples using microscopy
- Characterise materials with advanced microscopy and XRD techniques
- Support design optimisation and research direction
- Design and conduct interdisciplinary materials science studies
- Perform advanced materials characterisation with electron microscopy
- Investigate phase transformations and microstructural evolution
- Assess production techniques based on international standards
- Conduct quantitative image and data analysis
- Collaborate with internal teams and research institutes
- Summarise findings and present results in technical meetings
