Applied Physicist(m/w/x)
Performing quench protection and ramp loss simulations for particle accelerators. Numerical simulation and experimental validation experience required. 30 days paid leave, CERN health insurance.
Requirements
- Experience with numerical simulations (e.g. finite-element, finite difference or multiphysics tools) and comparison with experimental data
- Experience with experimental validation of numerical models
- Experience with electrical circuits and/or cryogenic testing techniques
- Experience with circuit simulations and analysis (e.g. PSPICE, XYCE)
- Experience with data analysis and visualisation (e.g. Python, MATLAB)
- Experience with superconducting magnets and accelerator technology would be an asset
- Coding and scripting in Python or MATLAB for data analysis and visualisation
- Basic understanding of superconductivity, magnet technology, and quench phenomena (LTS and/or HTS)
- Ability to work at the interface between simulations, experiments, and hardware testing
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and international team
- Structured approach to problem solving and technical reporting
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French
- National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Professional background in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computational Physics or related field
- Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience
- PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience
- Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before
Tasks
- Validate simulation tools against experimental data
- Perform quench protection and ramp loss simulations
- Support magnet test plan preparation
- Define quench protection circuits
- Analyse and visualise test data
- Produce technical reports and summaries
- Provide feedback to improve simulation tools
- Contribute to LTS and HTS magnet studies
- Supervise team members
