Requirements

  • Ability to learn Go quickly and write production Go
  • Proven management experience leading senior engineers (5+)
  • Deep MySQL knowledge (query optimization, indexing, replication, performance tuning)
  • Experience operating production systems (on-call, incident response, observability, postmortems)
  • Experience with functional programming concepts and languages
  • Understanding of software quality beyond aesthetics and best practices
  • Comfort with continuous studying for best choices
  • Ability to think outside specific languages and frameworks
  • Track record of establishing engineering principles
  • Raising the bar on code quality, correctness, and testing
  • Comfort working across team boundaries
  • Ability to build alignment and navigate competing priorities
  • Ability to get things done without formal authority
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Experience with Haskell
  • Experience leading platform or infrastructure teams
  • Background scaling systems with high concurrency or large data volumes
  • Experience hiring senior engineers in competitive markets
  • Staying technical (reading and writing code)
  • Earning team's respect through technical credibility
  • Setting and holding high standards kindly but firmly
  • Being a multiplier (team ships more and better)

Tasks

  • Lead and mentor a team of 5 senior engineers
  • Grow the team to 8 by interviewing, calibrating, and closing candidates
  • Coordinate across engineering teams to align priorities and unblock dependencies
  • Write and review Go code daily, setting high standards for quality and design
  • Optimize MySQL performance through query tuning, indexing, and schema design
  • Participate in on-call rotation and lead incident response for production issues
  • Establish and enforce strong engineering principles
  • Run 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations
  • Translate business priorities into a technical roadmap for the team
