Head of Climate(m/w/x)
Developing landscape-scale conservation and restoration projects in sub-Saharan Africa to mitigate climate change. Deep understanding of tropical/sub-tropical ecosystems essential. Frequent international travel for project development and ambassadorial duties.
Requirements
- Deep understanding of forest, grassland, and arable ecosystems in tropical and sub-tropical regions
- Over eight years of experience in designing, developing, and managing conservation or restoration projects
- Over five years of experience leading a team of specialised staff
- Experience in nature-based carbon project development is highly desirable
- Willingness to live and work in Berlin
- Willingness to commit to a full-time (40-hours per week) role
- Willingness to travel extensively and overseas for work, especially to sub-Saharan Africa
- Possibility to contact former employers
- Fluency in English and desired languages are Portuguese, French, and/or Spanish
- Education in environment, agriculture, forestry, and/or landscape management is desirable
- Knowledge of relevant scientific tools and methods is desirable
- Deep knowledge of nature conservation and landscape restoration work in sub-Saharan African countries is a plus
Tasks
- Identify opportunities for large-scale terrestrial conservation in sub-Saharan Africa
- Establish strategic partnerships for project development and implementation
- Select appropriate technology and technical services for project development
- Develop a learning and development program for Climate Department staff
- Act as the organization's scientific ambassador and spokesperson
- Conceptualize viable conservation and restoration projects
- Create project financial plans with the Head of Finance and Project Development Specialist
- Peer review the work of Climate Department staff
- Maintain project development aligned with market and regulatory changes
- Ensure coordination between the Climate Department and Country Offices
- Lead the Climate Department staff with mindfulness
- Manage department budget, staff selection, resource allocation, and performance appraisal
