Computational Physicist(m/w/x)
Automating ion beam production steps for TALISMAN at CERN. Practical experience with control algorithms and Python programming required. 30 days paid leave, CERN health insurance.
Requirements
- Initial experience in experimental laboratory/test-bench environment (optics, laser systems, or similar)
- Practical experience with control/optimisation algorithms or machine learning (ML) methods
- Programming experience in Python, including scientific and ML libraries
- Practical application of software engineering practices, including version control (Git)
- Experience applying control algorithms and ML techniques to real-world systems and bringing solutions to operational deployment
- Experience interfacing software with laboratory hardware (motors, cameras, sensors, or similar)
- Experience with beam transport and alignment
- Prior exposure to LabVIEW
- Solid grounding in physics or engineering
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
- Ability to translate algorithmic concepts into working, maintainable code
- Familiarity with image processing and analysis techniques
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, comfortable working across physics, controls, and software domains
- Spoken and written English, commitment to learn French
- National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Maximum of two years professional experience since graduation in Applied Physics, Computer Science (or related field) with Bachelor's or Master's degree
- Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before
- Applicants without University degree are not eligible
- Applicants with a PhD are not eligible
Tasks
- Join a multidisciplinary team to develop TALISMAN automation
- Combine laboratory activities with control algorithm design
- Work with experimental hardware and modern algorithms
- Automate ion beam production steps
- Engage stakeholders to define project requirements
- Collaborate in the laboratory with laser physicists
- Research and prototype control algorithms
- Integrate algorithms into device control software
- Validate and document automation solutions
