Beam Physicist(m/w/x)
Electromagnetic simulations for wakefield and impedance studies, developing Wakis/Xsuite interface at a particle physics research organization. Solid background in electromagnetics or computational physics with numerical simulations experience required; accelerator physics knowledge a plus. 30 days paid leave, 2 weeks annual closure.
Requirements
- Solid background in electromagnetics or computational physics
- Numerical simulations and scientific computing
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative software development
- Open-source software development experience
- Asset: Knowledge of accelerator physics, wakefields, or beam coupling impedance
- Knowledge of electromagnetic simulation tools (CST, HFSS, COMSOL, or similar)
- Programming experience in Python
- Familiarity with numerical methods and scientific computing
- Problem-solving mindset and quick learning ability
- Good communication, mentoring, and support skills
- Spoken and written English or French, commitment to learn other language basics
- Nationality of CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Professional background in Physics, Engineering (or related field); Master's degree with 2-6 years post-graduation experience OR PhD with max 3 years post-graduation experience
- No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract
Tasks
- Perform electromagnetic simulations for wakefield and impedance studies.
- Analyze simulation coupling with beam dynamics.
- Develop an optimized interface between Wakis and Xsuite.
- Design, implement, and validate new Wakis features and methods.
- Validate Wakis on realistic geometries using bench measurements.
- Coordinate and prioritize Wakis development activities.
- Benchmark Wakis against commercial solvers and analytical models.
- Construct, validate, and maintain CERN impedance models.
- Support and supervise junior students on Wakis tasks.
- Review developer contributions.
- Assist with code integration and testing.
- Improve Wakis documentation, examples, and workflows.
- Present progress and results in meetings and working groups.
