Operating and upgrading gas systems for LHC experiments, including R&D for greenhouse gas replacement. Experience with gaseous detectors in high-radiation environments and eco-gases required. 30 days paid leave, stand-by duty, and underground interventions.
Requirements
- Experience operating gaseous detectors
- Experience in gas systems design, operation, or maintenance
- Practical knowledge of industrial instrumentation and sensors
- Experience operating gaseous detectors in high-radiation environments and with eco-gases
- Ability to perform technical interventions in experimental areas
- Understanding of gaseous particle detector operation and radiation effects
- Operation of gaseous detectors with eco-gas mixtures
- Knowledge of gas distribution systems
- Familiarity with gas analysis techniques and leak detection methods
- Proactive identification of potential system weaknesses
- Willingness to work in varied environments and adapt to changing priorities
- Spoken and written English or French, with commitment to learn basics of other language
- National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
- Professional background in Physics or Engineering (or related field)
- Master's degree with 2 to 6 years post-graduation experience
- Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before
- Valid driving licence
- Radiation worker, category A
- Exposure to risk of falling from heights during scaffolding operations
- Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain conditions
- Medical clearance for occupational health risks
Tasks
- Operate and maintain gas systems for LHC experiments
- Perform technical upgrades on gas systems
- Provide 24/7 technical support during LHC runs
- Conduct R&D to replace greenhouse gases
- Operate test setups in high-radiation environments
- Validate eco-friendly gases for detector compatibility
- Learn about gaseous detectors and gas systems
- Supervise team members
