Senior Experimental Systems Engineer(m/w/x)
Designing and commissioning experimental hardware for fusion energy research. 5+ years of experimental engineering experience required. Public transport reimbursement, fitness club access.
Requirements
- BSc. or M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or related field
- 5+ years of experience in experimental engineering or diagnostics
- Ability to lead technical efforts and mentor engineers
- Strong foundation in experimental hardware, alignment, calibration, and instrumentation
- Experience across mechanical, electrical, software, and physics domains
- Clear, structured communication skills and ability to influence technical direction
- Experience with fusion experiments, plasma diagnostics, laser systems or particle accelerator environments
- Background in optics, imaging, high-speed data acquisition or precision instrumentation
- Familiarity with simulation or modeling tools
- Experience building stable, reproducible experiment platforms
Tasks
- Translate scientific objectives into practical experimental hardware
- Ensure technical developments are clear, rigorous, and repeatable
- Partner with scientists to interpret experimental objectives
- Guide scientists in translating objectives into setups and diagnostic systems
- Lead hands-on design, implementation, and commissioning of experimental hardware
- Set technical direction and standards for the team
- Mentor engineers in experimental methods and alignment practices
- Coach engineers in calibration and troubleshooting
- Enable rapid R&D iteration through pragmatic design choices
- Support risk-aware prototyping and fast learning cycles
- Define and maintain documentation standards for experiment hardware
- Document procedures, alignment methods, and calibration routines
- Ensure safe operating practices are clear and usable
- Bridge physics and engineering perspectives
- Translate scientific requirements into engineering principles
- Define constraints and acceptance criteria
- Lead structured problem-solving for complex system issues
- Support engineers in root-cause analysis
